MTCC begins urgent Rasfannu breakwater works to restore popular Malé beach

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 8 hours ago

Work has officially commenced on the reprofiling of the breakwater at Rasfannu artificial beach, with authorities temporarily closing the area to facilitate critical maintenance aimed at enhancing safety and long-term usability.

The Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure announced that the closure, which began last week, is necessary to allow uninterrupted progress on the project. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), tasked with executing the works, confirmed that efforts are underway to complete the upgrades as quickly as possible and reopen the site to the public without unnecessary delay.

According to MTCC, the project focuses on addressing persistent beach erosion, restructuring the breakwater to improve water circulation within the lagoon, and installing an efficient drainage system across the facility. These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance both environmental stability and user experience at the site.

Rasfannu, located on the western edge of Malé, remains one of the capital’s most valued public recreational spaces. The beach is widely frequented by families and residents seeking a convenient seaside escape for swimming, relaxation, and evening outings.

The area also serves as a community hub, featuring takeaway food outlets, barbecue facilities, and traditional joali seating. Its elevated platform near West Park has long been a favored spot for recreational fishing, further underlining its importance to urban life in the capital.

Authorities expect the ongoing improvements to not only restore the beach’s structural integrity but also elevate Rasfannu’s role as a safe, accessible, and modern leisure destination for residents.
