Maldives does not support war or destruction of any nation, President Muizzu says

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 5 hours ago

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives firmly opposes war and the destruction of any country, reaffirming a foreign policy grounded in peace, national interest, and principled diplomacy.

Speaking at a press briefing at the President’s Office on Monday, the President emphasised that the government does not advocate aggression or conflict under any circumstances, warning that war is detrimental to global stability and causes widespread suffering.

Outlining the country’s broader diplomatic stance, President Muizzu said the Maldives follows a clear “Maldives First” policy, where all foreign relations are guided by what best serves the interests of Maldivian citizens. He highlighted that the nation’s identity as a 100 percent Islamic state plays a central role in shaping its international engagements.

The President noted that the Maldives maintains strong ties with Arab and Islamic nations, built on longstanding bonds of brotherhood and mutual support. He added that close relations are also preserved with neighbouring countries and key development partners, reflecting a balanced and cooperative approach to diplomacy.

Clarifying remarks made during an earlier briefing, President Muizzu said his statements had been interpreted in different ways but stressed that the core message remains unchanged: the Maldives will always prioritise its national interest while advocating peace.

He further stated that while the country rejects war and destruction, it will not remain silent in the face of injustice, particularly when Muslim communities are affected. According to the President, speaking out against such issues is consistent with the Maldives’ values and long-standing principles.

The remarks reinforce the government’s position of pursuing peace-driven diplomacy while maintaining solidarity on issues of global concern.
