Seven Memoranda of Understanding were exchanged in Colombo on Monday in the presence of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, marking a major boost to bilateral cooperation.
The agreements, signed following official talks between the two leaders, cover a wide range of sectors including defence, education, health, tourism, archives, and youth and sports development.
Among the key outcomes, a new MoU on defence cooperation was signed alongside the renewal of an agreement on defence education, training, and research. The partnership is set to focus on training programmes, staff exchanges, and joint research initiatives.
In education, both countries agreed to strengthen collaboration in teacher training and professional development, while expanding broader academic cooperation. The health sector will also benefit from enhanced institutional collaboration under the new framework.
Tourism cooperation was reinforced through the renewal of an existing MoU, with additional agreements focusing on collaboration between national archives and initiatives to promote youth and sports development.
President Muizzu arrived in Sri Lanka on Sunday for the ongoing state visit, which will continue until May 6. A joint press statement issued following the signing ceremony reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to deepen ties and advance cooperation across key sectors.
