President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday underscored the deep-rooted ties between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, describing the relationship as one built on “trust, love and companionship” during a state banquet hosted in Colombo.
Speaking at the official banquet hosted by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka, President Muizzu highlighted the historic and people-driven nature of the relationship, stating that the bond between the two countries extends far beyond formal diplomacy.

He noted that for centuries, exchanges across the Indian Ocean had fostered close cultural and social ties, with Sri Lanka remaining a place where Maldivians have studied, sought healthcare, and built lasting connections.
President Muizzu expressed gratitude for Sri Lanka’s longstanding support, acknowledging its role in contributing to the Maldives’ development over the decades. He said the partnership continues to evolve, with growing cooperation in areas such as digital transformation, sustainable tourism, renewable energy, and ocean conservation.
Emphasising shared challenges, President Muizzu identified climate change as a defining issue for both nations, calling for stronger collaboration and global advocacy to safeguard vulnerable island states. He stressed the need to transform shared vulnerabilities into collective strength through innovation and resilience.
The President also highlighted the importance of people-to-people connections, noting that enduring ties between citizens form the foundation of bilateral relations and give meaning to agreements and partnerships.
Concluding his remarks, President Muizzu reaffirmed commitment to further strengthening Maldives–Sri Lanka relations, expressing confidence that cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow in the years ahead.
The banquet was held as part of President Muizzu’s ongoing state visit to Sri Lanka, which runs until May 6.
