The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has increased its purchase price for skipjack tuna to MVR 20 per kilogram, delivering on a key pledge made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to support the country’s fishing community.
MIFCO announced that all of its processing facilities and collector vessels will now buy skipjack tuna at the revised rate of MVR 20 per kilogram. The new price is effective immediately at the company’s major fisheries complexes in Felivaru, Kooddoo and Addu, as well as at the harbors of GDh. Thinadhoo, GDh. Faresmaathodaa, GDh. Gadhdhoo, and HA. Ihavandhoo.
The increase follows the company’s earlier revision on the 7th of this month, when the purchase price was raised to MVR 18.50 per kilogram.
The latest adjustment is expected to provide additional income for fishermen and strengthen confidence within the fisheries sector, one of the Maldives’ most important economic industries.
MIFCO confirmed that yellowfin tuna purchase prices remain unchanged. The company will continue to buy yellowfin tuna weighing between 10 and 15 kilograms at MVR 20 per kilogram, while yellowfin tuna above 15 kilograms will continue to be purchased at MVR 25 per kilogram.
The increase to MVR 20 per kilogram fulfils President Muizzu’s commitment to improve returns for local fishermen and enhance support for the fisheries sector, a key pillar of the Maldivian economy.
