STELCO Joins Initiative to Bring Free World Cup Coverage to Public

By Hussain Shinan Published June 11, 2026

The State Electric Company (STELCO) has signed on as a partner in the nationwide initiative to provide free FIFA World Cup coverage to the Maldivian public.

An agreement formalizing the partnership was signed on Tuesday between Public Service Media (PSM) and STELCO, as efforts continue to ensure that football fans across the country can watch the tournament at no additional cost.

The agreement was signed by STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azuwar on behalf of the utility company, while PSM Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb signed on behalf of the state broadcaster.

The partnership forms part of a broader government-led initiative to make World Cup matches freely accessible to the public through PSM’s platforms.

In a statement, STELCO expressed satisfaction in contributing to an initiative that directly benefits the public, noting that the company remains committed to supporting social programmes that promote community engagement and public welfare.

The company described its participation in the initiative as an opportunity to contribute to an event that brings people together and fosters national unity through sport.

The FIFA World Cup remains one of the most widely followed sporting events in the Maldives, attracting large audiences across the country every four years.

To expand public access to this year’s tournament, PSM has partnered with several institutions and private companies to support free broadcasts and related programming.

The state broadcaster has also announced plans to air a wide range of World Cup-related content, including match analysis programmes, interactive segments and special features throughout the tournament.

Authorities have previously stated that ensuring broad access to the tournament aligns with efforts to promote sports and create shared experiences for communities across the Maldives.

With STELCO now joining as an official partner, the initiative has received further support as preparations continue for extensive World Cup coverage during the tournament.
