Hulhumalé drivers warned against illegal pavement parking as Police step up enforcement

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 6 hours ago

The Maldives Police Service has urged motorists to stop parking vehicles on pavements in Hulhumalé, warning that enforcement measures have been intensified against those violating traffic regulations.

Police said there has been a noticeable rise in vehicles being parked on sidewalks intended exclusively for pedestrians, creating safety risks and obstructing public movement. Authorities called on drivers to refrain from using these areas for parking.

According to Police, vehicles are frequently being left on both sides of pavements across Hulhumalé, causing inconvenience for pedestrians and other road users. The practice has also disrupted the smooth flow of public transport in several areas.

The Maldives Police Service said officers are actively towing vehicles found to be illegally parked on pavements.

Under Section 55 of the Land Transport Act, driving or parking any vehicle on sidewalks or pedestrian-designated areas is prohibited. The only exceptions are baby strollers and manually operated wheelchairs used by persons with disabilities.

Police urged all motorists to comply with the law and help ensure pavements remain safe and accessible for pedestrians.
