Ooredoo celebrates 21 years of connecting and empowering the Maldives

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 3 hours ago

As Ooredoo Maldives marks its 21st anniversary, the company’s journey reflects more than the growth of a telecommunications provider. Over the past two decades, Ooredoo has increasingly positioned itself as a partner in community development, combining investments in digital infrastructure with programmes aimed at improving education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability and social inclusion across the Maldives.

Since entering the Maldivian market in 2005, Ooredoo has expanded from providing mobile connectivity to becoming a digital services provider with nationwide 5G, fintech solutions and digital platforms. Alongside these technological advancements, the company has maintained a long-term approach to corporate social responsibility, focusing on initiatives designed to create lasting benefits for communities rather than one-off campaigns.

One of Ooredoo’s most consistent areas of investment has been digital education. Since 2018, the company has conducted digital literacy programmes across the country, helping people gain the skills needed to navigate an increasingly connected world. In recent years, these programmes have expanded to include senior citizens, offering practical training on smartphone use, online services and everyday digital applications. The initiative aims to ensure older generations are not left behind as more public and private services move online.

The company has also embraced emerging technologies by organising AI-focused learning sessions and digital innovation programmes, equipping students and young professionals with knowledge that supports future employment and entrepreneurship in the digital economy. These initiatives complement Ooredoo’s broader efforts to nurture innovation and encourage young Maldivians to explore careers in technology.

Supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses has been another key focus. Through initiatives such as the Niru Accelerator Programme and SME networking events, Ooredoo has helped startups and growing businesses access mentorship, digital tools and opportunities to scale their operations. The company’s digital platforms, including m-Faisaa and Moolee, have further enabled businesses to adopt cashless payments and e-commerce solutions.

Community engagement remains one of Ooredoo’s most visible contributions. The annual Ooredoo Fun Run has evolved into one of the country’s largest public events, attracting thousands of participants while promoting healthy lifestyles and family-friendly recreation. The event has expanded beyond Malé to islands including Addu City, Laamu and Hulhumalé, reinforcing community connections through sport and wellness. Likewise, the Ooredoo Mas Race has celebrated the country’s fishing heritage while bringing together communities across multiple atolls.

In healthcare, Ooredoo has contributed by donating medical equipment and health kits to island communities, while previously providing sea ambulance equipment and emergency response support to strengthen healthcare accessibility across the country. These initiatives have been complemented by efforts to improve digital connectivity for healthcare and emergency services.

Environmental sustainability has also become an important pillar of the company’s community programmes. Through its “Grow with Ooredoo” initiative, the company has pledged to plant thousands of trees across the Maldives while conducting community tree-planting activities with schools, youth groups and senior citizens to promote environmental awareness and climate resilience.

The company’s investments in digital infrastructure have also played a significant role in connecting islands and expanding access to high-speed internet. Initiatives such as the Digital Island programme, continued expansion of nationwide 5G coverage and submarine cable projects have helped improve connectivity for residents, businesses and public services throughout the Maldives.

As Ooredoo celebrates its 21st anniversary, the company’s community initiatives reflect a broader philosophy that technology should create opportunities beyond communication. From empowering young innovators and supporting entrepreneurs to improving healthcare, promoting digital inclusion and strengthening communities through sports and environmental programmes, Ooredoo says every investment in technology should ultimately improve people’s lives.
