Fenaka Corporation expanded its “Magey Solar” net metering programme to households in 11 atolls during 2025, as part of the utility provider’s continued efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce reliance on conventional electricity generation.
According to the corporation, households in Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Noonu, Raa, Baa, Thaa, Laamu, Gaafu Alifu, Gaafu Dhaalu and Gnaviyani atolls benefited from the service during the year.
Among the participating regions, Noonu Atoll recorded the highest number of household connections, with 40 homes joining the programme. Laamu Atoll followed closely, with 37 households connected to the net metering system.
Fenaka also expanded the initiative beyond residential customers, making the service available to businesses and government institutions across all islands where the corporation provides electricity services.
The Magey Solar programme allows customers who install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate their own electricity and feed surplus energy back into the national grid through a net metering arrangement.
Under the system, electricity generated by solar panels that exceeds a customer’s immediate consumption is exported to the grid. The exported units are then credited against the customer’s electricity bill, meaning consumers are charged only for the difference between the electricity they consume from the grid and the electricity they supply back. This can significantly reduce monthly electricity costs while encouraging investment in renewable energy.
The Maldives introduced net metering regulations to accelerate the adoption of clean energy technologies and support the country’s transition towards a more sustainable energy sector. The scheme is open to both households and commercial establishments that install eligible solar energy systems.
As one of the country’s largest utility providers, Fenaka has been expanding renewable energy initiatives alongside its electricity, water and sewerage services. The corporation says increasing the use of solar power is an important step towards improving energy security, reducing fuel dependency and supporting the Maldives’ long-term environmental and climate goals.
