State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar met with Sri Lankan High Commissioner to the Maldives, Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, on Thursday to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector.
According to STELCO, the meeting focused on the longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, with both sides exploring opportunities to expand collaboration in areas related to energy and utility services.
The discussions also highlighted the close bilateral ties shared by the two neighbouring countries, which have cooperated for decades across a range of sectors including trade, education, healthcare and technical capacity building.
While specific projects were not announced, STELCO said the meeting explored ways to further enhance cooperation in the energy sector, reflecting the growing importance of regional partnerships as the Maldives continues to expand and modernise its electricity infrastructure.
The talks come as STELCO is undertaking several major initiatives to strengthen the country’s power generation and distribution network, including the planned construction of a 70-megawatt medium-speed powerhouse in Hulhumalé to meet rising electricity demand in the Greater Malé region.
Sri Lanka has remained one of the Maldives’ closest regional partners, with cooperation extending across government institutions, public utilities and human resource development. Both countries have continued to pursue closer engagement through bilateral discussions aimed at supporting sustainable development and economic growth.
