State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has enrolled 76 employees in technical and vocational programmes conducted in partnership with Maldives Polytechnic, as the utility company expands efforts to build a more skilled workforce.
The employees, drawn from different departments and regional powerhouses operated by STELCO, have enrolled in four Level 3 programmes under Maldives Polytechnic’s August 2026 intake.
The courses were officially launched at a ceremony attended by STELCO Managing Director Dr. Ali Azwar, who described investment in employee training as part of a much broader contribution towards the development of the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Azwar said STELCO’s long-term vision is to ensure that the majority of its workforce consists of employees who have received appropriate skills training and professional development.
He stressed that the purpose of the programmes goes beyond employees obtaining certificates, with the company seeking to strengthen their practical skills, knowledge and overall capacity to perform their roles.
Dr. Azwar encouraged the 76 participants to make full use of the opportunity by actively participating in lessons and practical exercises, asking questions and exchanging knowledge and experiences with other employees during the courses.
The benefits of the training, he said, should ultimately be reflected in employees’ performance at work and shared with their colleagues once they complete the programmes.
Dr. Azwar also linked workforce development at STELCO to the quality of essential services delivered to the public, arguing that improvements in employee capabilities eventually benefit the wider country.
“The progress made by our employees translates directly into the growth of this company. The company’s growth, in turn, benefits the general public who rely on our services. Ultimately, this progress belongs to the entire nation,” he said.
“Therefore, a portion of the investment made towards the development of the whole country is what we are allocating today towards employee training.”
STELCO operates electricity generation and distribution services in Malé and several islands across the country, making technical expertise an important part of maintaining reliable power services and operating increasingly complex energy infrastructure.
The latest partnership with Maldives Polytechnic provides employees working across different areas of the company with an opportunity to obtain recognised Certificate Level qualifications while developing skills relevant to their work.
STELCO has been investing in both its workforce and infrastructure as electricity requirements continue to increase, particularly in the Greater Malé region. The company is currently preparing several major capacity expansion projects, including a new 70-megawatt powerhouse planned for Hulhumalé.
According to STELCO, the latest training initiative forms part of its broader efforts to develop qualified employees capable of supporting the company’s growth and the country’s evolving electricity infrastructure.
