Fenaka connects new residential zones in four islands to power grid

By Hussain Shinan Published 33 minutes ago

Fenaka Corporation has expanded electricity services to newly inhabited areas in four islands, connecting households in L. Fonadhoo, HDh. Nolhivaranfaru, Th. Buruni and Th. Thimarafushi to the power grid as residential development expands beyond existing settlement areas.

The state-owned utility said the works are part of a broader effort to ensure essential services are available to families moving into newly developed housing and residential zones across its service network.

In L. Fonadhoo, infrastructure required to supply electricity to the island’s new expansion area was completed by the end of June. With the network in place, 80 households have now been connected to electricity services.

Fenaka has also commissioned electricity services for 48 households in a newly inhabited area of Th. Buruni, completing the power infrastructure required for residents settling in the area.

Network expansion works in HDh. Nolhivaranfaru and Th. Thimarafushi were completed last year, providing the infrastructure needed to supply electricity to a combined 100 housing units across the two islands.

In Nolhivaranfaru, the project included the installation of 825 metres of low-voltage cable and 12 distribution boxes, extending the island’s existing electricity network into the new residential area.

Fenaka said similar projects are progressing in other parts of the country as new housing areas are developed and communities expand.

Electricity network works for new residential zones in R. Maakurathu and R. Vaadhoo are now nearing completion. The company said efforts are underway to finish the remaining works and establish permanent electricity services for residents as soon as possible.

Extending utility networks into new residential areas has become increasingly important as housing projects, land allocation programmes and population growth expand settlements beyond established electricity, water and sewerage networks on inhabited islands.

Unlike simply adding generation capacity at an existing powerhouse, supplying newly developed areas can require extensions to distribution networks, including underground or overhead cabling, distribution boxes and other infrastructure needed to safely deliver electricity to individual properties.

Fenaka provides essential utility services across a large number of inhabited islands, with its operations covering electricity as well as water and sewerage services in areas under its mandate.

The company said its priority is to ensure people relocating to newly developed areas are able to access basic utility services without unnecessary delays, while continuing work to strengthen the reliability of electricity networks across the islands.
