The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed 90 percent of subgrade repair works on Segment 1 of Ameenee Magu, bringing the rehabilitation of one of Malé’s busiest roads closer to its next construction stage.
MTCC said Thursday that the remaining subgrade repairs are expected to be completed by the end of the day. Once completed, crews will begin laying the Aggregate Base Course (ABC), which will prepare the road foundation for subsequent surfacing works.
Segment 1 covers the stretch from Izzudheen Magu, near Voice of Maldives, to the park adjacent to Dharumavantha Hospital.
Physical works on the segment began in early August following preliminary surveys. The section was subsequently closed to traffic to allow MTCC to carry out the reconstruction works.
The latest repairs were commissioned after parts of Ameenee Magu deteriorated following its previous redevelopment, with sections developing potholes, uneven surfaces and raised asphalt that created difficulties for motorists.
The previous 1.79-kilometre redevelopment of Ameenee Magu was undertaken at a cost of MVR 84.4 million.
The government awarded MTCC the latest road repair programme in June. In addition to Ameenee Magu, the programme includes repairs to Izzudheen Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu, as well as modifications to pavement areas around bus stops to improve durability.
MTCC has previously said it expects the Ameenee Magu repair project to be completed by November.
