Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) showcased the engineering and technical systems that keep Velana International Airport running during the National Engineers’ Day Children’s Evening held at Hulhumalé Central Park.
The event was organised to introduce children to the role engineers play in national development and encourage greater interest in engineering and other technical careers.
MACL used its participation to give young visitors a closer look at the range of specialised teams working behind the scenes at the country’s main international airport, where engineering services are essential to maintaining daily operations.
Seven areas of MACL’s engineering and technical operations were featured during the event, covering water and sewerage services, mechanical services, heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), fuel services, information technology, aerodrome ground aids, and power generation and distribution.
Engineers from MACL interacted directly with children and other visitors, explaining how the different systems operate and sharing practical experiences from their work at the airport.
The displays also provided information on engineering career opportunities within airport management and the wider aviation sector, allowing young participants to learn about professions that are often less visible to passengers travelling through the airport.
Operating an international airport requires a broad network of technical systems to function continuously, ranging from electricity generation and fuel infrastructure to airfield equipment, cooling systems, water services and information technology. Many of these operations are critical to maintaining safe and efficient airport services.
As the operator of Velana International Airport, MACL oversees the country’s primary aviation gateway and is responsible for a wide range of infrastructure and technical operations supporting airlines, passengers and airport services.
The role of engineering at the airport has become increasingly significant as Velana International Airport undergoes major infrastructure expansion. The airport’s development has included new passenger facilities and upgrades to supporting infrastructure aimed at increasing capacity as the Maldives’ tourism and aviation sectors continue to grow.
MACL said initiatives such as its participation in the Children’s Evening are intended to help cultivate interest among young people and encourage the development of future technical professionals for the country’s aviation industry.
The National Engineers’ Day Children’s Evening was held at Hulhumalé Central Park from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, bringing together organisations from different engineering fields to introduce their work to children and families.
