Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to undertake four infrastructure projects covering harbour development, land reclamation and coastal protection works in different parts of the country.
The agreements were signed between MTCC and the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure, assigning the state-owned company projects in HA. Kelaa, HA. Muraidhoo, B. Kihadhoo and Dh. Bandidhoo.
MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudy signed the agreements on behalf of the company, while State Minister Ismail Hameed represented the ministry at the signing ceremony.
The largest in terms of the announced implementation period is the project in HA. Kelaa, where MTCC will carry out harbour upgrading works alongside land reclamation to support the development of fisheries infrastructure.
The Kelaa project is expected to take approximately two years to complete. The works are intended to improve the island’s harbour facilities while creating additional space required for fisheries-related development.
In neighbouring HA. Muraidhoo, MTCC has been assigned a coastal protection project. No completion period was specified in the information released on the project.
Coastal protection remains an important infrastructure requirement across the Maldives, where inhabited islands are particularly exposed to erosion, changing wave conditions and other environmental pressures. Such projects commonly involve the construction of protective structures and other interventions intended to safeguard shorelines and developed areas.
MTCC will undertake another coastal protection project in B. Kihadhoo, with the works expected to be completed within approximately one year.
Meanwhile, the company has been given a shorter five-month implementation period for its project in Dh. Bandidhoo.
Works there will involve harbour dredging and the development of a jetty, aimed at improving maritime access and infrastructure available to the island community.
The Ministry has not disclosed the contract values of any of the four projects.
Baarah MP Ibrahim Shujau and Kelaa MP Abdulla Shareef were among those who attended the agreement signing ceremony at the Ministry.
The latest contracts add to MTCC’s extensive portfolio of infrastructure projects across the Maldives. The company undertakes harbour construction and redevelopment, dredging and reclamation, coastal protection, road development and other civil engineering works throughout the archipelago.
Harbour and coastal infrastructure are particularly significant for island communities, where maritime transport remains central to the movement of residents, goods and essential supplies. Erosion and limited harbour capacity have also resulted in continued investment in shore protection and maritime infrastructure across the country.
MTCC is currently carrying out multiple infrastructure projects nationwide, including ongoing road and civil works in the Greater Malé region as well as harbour, reclamation and coastal protection projects across the atolls.
The four newly awarded projects will see the company expand that portfolio across Haa Alif, Baa and Dhaalu atolls, with completion periods ranging from five months for the Bandidhoo works to around two years for the Kelaa development.
