Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed 87 percent of the harbour development project in L. Gan, bringing the MVR 33.4 million infrastructure project closer to completion.
MTCC said work is continuing at the project site, with crews currently carrying out slab concrete casting as construction moves through its remaining stages.
The project involves a series of improvements aimed at strengthening harbour infrastructure and providing safer and more convenient facilities for vessels and residents using the harbour.
Under the project, MTCC is constructing a 360-metre breakwater to provide greater protection to the harbour area from waves and rough sea conditions.
The scope also includes the installation of a 310-metre quay wall, providing additional infrastructure for vessels to berth and improving the overall functionality of the harbour.
A total of 2,501 square metres of harbour pavement will be developed as part of the works, alongside the construction of a bridge.
MTCC will also install street lighting within the harbour area, improving visibility and accessibility for people using the facility after dark.
The project was awarded to the state-owned infrastructure company for MVR 33.4 million.
Gan is one of the largest and most populated islands in Laamu Atoll and serves as an important residential and economic centre in the region. Its size and road connectivity with neighbouring Fonadhoo, Kadhdhoo and Maandhoo make reliable maritime infrastructure particularly important for the movement of people, goods and commercial activity.
Harbours remain a critical component of infrastructure development across the Maldives, where island communities depend heavily on sea transport for domestic travel, cargo movements, fisheries and access to essential supplies.
The Gan project forms part of MTCC’s wider portfolio of harbour, coastal protection, reclamation and civil infrastructure works being implemented across the country.
MTCC has recently secured several additional island infrastructure contracts, including projects in Maafushi, Funadhoo, Gaafaru, Madaveli and Dharanboodhoo, covering land reclamation, coastal protection and harbour development.
With 87 percent of the Gan harbour project now completed, the ongoing slab concrete works bring the MVR 33.4 million development closer to its final stages.
