MWSC and HDC discuss joint efforts to support Greater Malé development

By Hussain Shinan Published 7 hours ago

Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have held discussions on expanding cooperation to support the continued development of Hulhumalé and Thilafushi.

MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahmy met with HDC Managing Director Ali Zuhair and senior officials from both companies to explore areas where the two state-owned enterprises can work more closely on infrastructure and development requirements.

According to MWSC, the discussions focused on strengthening coordination between the companies and identifying opportunities for joint efforts aimed at ensuring development in Hulhumalé and Thilafushi is both sustainable and efficient.

The two companies have important and interconnected roles in the development of the Greater Malé region.

HDC oversees major aspects of urban development and land management in Hulhumalé, which has undergone significant expansion as successive governments seek to ease housing and space constraints in densely populated Malé.

MWSC, meanwhile, is responsible for critical water and sewerage infrastructure serving the Greater Malé region and has continued to expand its networks as new residential, commercial and public developments come into operation.

Closer coordination between infrastructure providers and urban development authorities is particularly important in Hulhumalé, where continued population growth and large-scale housing developments are increasing demand for essential utility services.

Thilafushi is also undergoing significant change as the government seeks to further develop the industrial island and strengthen its role within the Greater Malé economic area.

Located west of Malé, Thilafushi has for decades served as one of the country’s principal industrial locations. Development of the island requires supporting infrastructure capable of accommodating businesses, industrial facilities and future expansion while addressing environmental and utility requirements.

The broader Greater Malé region is also undergoing major infrastructure transformation, including the development of new housing, roads, utilities and transport connections linking key urban and industrial areas.

For MWSC, such expansion requires water production, storage, sewerage and distribution infrastructure to be planned alongside new developments rather than after communities and businesses begin operating.

The latest meeting between Fahmy and Zuhair therefore focused on how MWSC and HDC can strengthen institutional coordination as development continues in both Hulhumalé and Thilafushi.

MWSC said the discussions centred on working together towards sustainable and efficient development, with both companies exploring opportunities for further collaboration in the two strategically important areas.
