A new solar hybrid PV-BESS-DG system has been successfully installed in Rakeedhoo, Vaavu Atoll, significantly reducing the island’s reliance on diesel generators. The system, implemented by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO), provides more than sufficient electricity to meet the island’s needs, with the generator now operating only for two hours when absolutely necessary.
The solar hybrid system combines solar panels, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and a diesel generator (DG). During daylight hours, the island is powered entirely by solar energy, while the battery storage system ensures a constant power supply throughout the night. The system is fully automated and regularly monitored by STELCO staff to ensure optimal operation.
Ibrahim Nizam, General Manager of STELCO, highlighted the effectiveness of the new system, emphasizing that it meets the island’s power requirements and eliminates much of its reliance on diesel. Nizam stated that the goal is to provide a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the island, with the system expected to be fully operational within the next two weeks.
STELCO has installed a total of 270 kW of solar panels across various locations in Rakeedhoo, including on the roofs of 12 homes. Two additional households have expressed interest in solar installations, and the company plans to expand the system further by increasing its battery storage capacity in the near future.
This new solar hybrid system comes after a previous system, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in 2016, was damaged beyond repair. The current installation is fully funded by STELCO, marking a significant step in the company’s efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions in the Maldives.
