Soneva Namoona, a Maldivian NGO dedicated to sustainable waste management, has celebrated its sixth anniversary, highlighting its transformative contributions to environmental conservation across the country.
The milestone event, held at Soneva Fushi, brought together representatives from various island councils, including Lhohi, Magoodhoo, Kudafari, Eydhafushi, Maalhos, and several others in Baa and Noonu Atolls. The NGO collaborates closely with these councils to establish sustainable waste management systems tailored to the Maldives’ unique island context.
Since its inception, Soneva Namoona has launched flagship programs aimed at reducing reliance on single-use plastics, promoting sustainable waste management, and fostering a deeper appreciation for the ocean.
“Our partnerships with island councils have led to innovative practices that are well-suited to our small island settings. The formalization of these practices into a sustainable waste management model is a significant collective achievement,” said Gordon Jackson, a representative of Soneva Namoona.
Notable Achievements
Over the past six years, the organization has achieved several milestones:
- Elimination of Single-Use Plastics: Prevented one million single-use plastic bottles from entering the ocean or being incinerated by producing and distributing 500,000 liters of Soneva Water in reusable packaging.
- Waste Diversion: Diverted over 800 tonnes of waste from the ocean or burning through comprehensive waste management initiatives.
- Recycling Efforts: Facilitated the recycling of 500 tonnes of materials.
- Community Engagement: Engaged over 6,000 individuals through programs promoting sustainable lifestyles and environmental stewardship.
Local council members lauded the NGO’s efforts. Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, Vice President of the Baa Atoll Council and President of Kendhoo Council, remarked, “Waste management was once a low priority. But with Soneva Namoona’s incredible support, we’ve made remarkable progress, showcasing a blueprint for sustainable practices across the Maldives.”
Looking Ahead
Soneva Namoona’s President, Azhoora Ahmed, outlined the organization’s ambitious vision for the coming year. “In 2025, we aim to scale our impact nationwide. We invite the government, private sector, and like-minded organizations to join us in realizing a future where sustainable waste management is a reality across the Maldives.”
The event underscored Soneva Namoona’s commitment to environmental sustainability, positioning the Maldives as a model for innovative waste management solutions.
