Invoking Ameen’s Fate: Fayyaz’s Provocative Stand on President Muizzu

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 9, 2024

MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail stated that if public are mistreated, they should respond to President Muizzu in the same manner as they did to the Maldives’ first President, Mohamed Ameen. This remark was in reference to a statement made during an MDP rally in Kulhudhuffushi, suggesting that people might take similar actions against President Muizzu as they did against Ameen Didi. Fayyaz emphasized that this was intended as a cautionary note, underscoring the importance of reminding leaders about historical events in the Maldives.

Fayyaz remarked, “If people face mistreatment, they will have no choice but to resort to actions similar to those taken against Mohamed Ameen. What alternatives do they have?” Meanwhile, authorities are investigating the individual who suggested replicating actions against Muizzu similar to those against Mohamed Ameen.

During President Ameen’s tenure, while he was undergoing medical treatment in Colombo, a coup was orchestrated by senior government officials, resulting in the overthrow of his administration and the appointment of Vice President Ibrahim Nasir as the new leader. Upon Ameen’s return to the Maldives, he was detained at Dhoonidhoo. This led his supporters to mobilize efforts to bring Nasir into power. Amidst the ensuing turmoil, Ameen was assaulted and cast into a boat on the lagoon. He later died after being exiled to K. Gaafaru and subsequently moved to K. Vihamanaafushi due to declining health.
