Crisis in the Capital: Ministry of Housing on Fire

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 12, 2024

A fire erupted and began spreading within the M. Green Building, which accommodates the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure as well as the Ministry of Housing, Land, and Urban Development. Reports indicate that the blaze ignited at approximately 7:30 this morning. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has confirmed that their Fire and Rescue Services are actively responding to the incident in the building housing the Construction Ministry.

As the fire advanced through the Green Building, employees from nearby office buildings were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Additionally, authorities including military and police personnel are engaged in evacuating residents from surrounding homes.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has arrived at the scene of the fire, joined by Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon, Construction Minister Dr. Abdullah Muttalib, and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim. Smoke from the fire within the Construction Ministry’s facility is dispersing throughout the vicinity.
