Maldives Braces for Deteriorating Weather Due to Low-Pressure System

By Ahmed Ashraf Published December 31, 2024

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecasted worsening weather conditions across the Maldives over the next five days, attributed to a low-pressure system forming southwest of Sri Lanka. This system, along with a related low-pressure trough, is anticipated to bring significant rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds, rough seas, and potential swell waves to many regions from January 1 to 5, coinciding with the New Year holidays.

During this period, winds in the central atolls are expected to blow from the north and northeast, while in the southern atolls, they are likely to come from the west and northwest. Wind speeds are projected to range between 15 and 25 miles per hour, with gusts possibly reaching up to 50 miles per hour. The Met Office also noted that sea conditions are generally expected to be rough.

In light of these predictions, the Met Office has advised seafarers to stay informed by obtaining the latest weather updates.
