Maldives Meteorological Service Extends Orange Alert Amid Ongoing Severe Weather Conditions

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 3, 2025

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has prolonged the orange alert initially issued for regions spanning from Baa Atoll to Thaa Atoll due to ongoing severe weather conditions. Initially set from 3 PM to 7 PM today, the alert has now been extended until 11 PM. This extension anticipates continued heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential flooding in these areas.

Additionally, the MET Office has placed a white alert in effect for regions from Haa Alif Atoll to Raa Atoll. This alert forecasts heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and will remain active until 11:30 PM tonight.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has confirmed flooding incidents on six islands as a result of the intense rain and tidal surges. Authorities are actively working to alleviate flooding through drainage efforts on affected islands.
