Government Swiftly Provides Relief to Hundreds Affected by Torrential Rains

Today, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced that 226 individuals from 36 households have been accommodated in temporary shelters following the severe flooding in Male’ caused by yesterday’s heavy rainfall. The NDMA reported that 774 locations across Male’ sought assistance for flood-related issues.

Assistance requests included 554 calls for sandbags and rapid assessments by police and Red Crescent for 53 homes facing critical needs. Temporary shelter and meals were provided to those whose living conditions were deeply impacted.

Beyond Male’, several islands reported weather-related damages:

– R. Inguraidhoo and Sh. Maroshi experienced adverse weather and tidal surges.

– F. Nilandhoo saw 80% of its area submerged.

– Ten homes in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo and Dh. Meedhoo suffered flooding and damage.

– Nine residences in F. Magoodhoo were affected, with one requiring evacuation.

– Four homes in ADh. Maamigili endured severe destruction.

– Sixty homes in K. Guraidhoo reported various damage levels.

– F. Feeali faced flooding, leading to an evacuation.

– Sixty percent of houses in K. Himmafushi were inundated.

The heaviest downpour was recorded in Hulhule, with rain measuring 144 millimeters, closely followed by Male’ at 142.2 millimeters. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) successfully drained over 30,000 tons of water from Male’. The relentless rain led to extensive flooding across Male’, damaging public infrastructure, residences, and parked vehicles significantly.
