Malé City Council Approves MVR 487M Budget for 2025

By The Standard Published January 9, 2025

The Malé City Council has approved a budget of MVR 487 million for 2025. The projected budget was passed during the 178th meeting of the council’s fourth session on Thursday.

According to council officials, the proposed budget stands at MVR 487,225,847.50 for the upcoming year.

Speaking after the presentation of the budget, Deputy Mayor Nareesh highlighted potential avenues for revenue generation, noting that the council possesses specialized vehicles not commonly seen on the streets of Malé. He suggested that acquiring additional vehicles of this type and renting them out to private individuals and companies could be a profitable venture for the council.

The Deputy Mayor also pointed out that while the council’s budget allocation for 2025 is significant, it is MVR 23 million lower than last year’s approved budget. Despite this reduction, the council remains optimistic about effectively managing its resources to meet its goals for the capital city.

The approved budget outlines the council’s plans for infrastructure improvements, public services, and community projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents in Malé City. The focus for the upcoming year includes initiatives to streamline operations and explore new income streams to support development.
