Maldives Retains Top Spot for Most Powerful Passport in South Asia

By Hussain Shinan Published January 13, 2025

The Maldives has once again secured its position as the holder of South Asia’s most powerful passport, maintaining its regional lead for another consecutive year.

According to the latest Henley Passport Index, the Maldives’ passport ranks 53rd globally, allowing visa-free access to 94 countries. The annual index, published by Henley & Partners, is based on data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and evaluates the travel freedom offered by passports worldwide.

The Maldives saw an improvement in its global ranking, climbing four places from its previous position of 57. Among South Asian nations, India trails behind at 85th place, with its passport granting visa-free access to 57 countries.

The continued rise in the Maldives’ passport ranking underscores the country’s growing global connectivity and the strength of its international relationships.
