President Muizzu Promises Boost for Boat Builders and Comprehensive Development for Innamaadhoo

By Hussain Shinan Published January 23, 2025

Innamaadhoo, Raa Atoll — President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has unveiled a series of ambitious initiatives aimed at revitalizing the island’s storied boat-building industry and addressing broader development needs. During a recent visit to the island, renowned for its skilled carpenters and craftsmanship, the President pledged mortgage-free loans, training programs, and infrastructure improvements to support the local community.

Addressing residents of Innamaadhoo as part of his tour of Raa Atoll, President Muizzu emphasized the importance of listening directly to the people to identify challenges and solutions. He acknowledged the pivotal role that boat building plays in the island’s economy and announced plans to facilitate unsecured loans for carpenters through the banking system.

“Our goal is to strengthen this vital sector while ensuring it remains locally driven,” the President said. To achieve this, he revealed plans to establish a specialized training center on the island. The institution will focus on equipping locals with the skills needed to sustain and grow the industry while encouraging greater participation from youth.

During his discussions with the carpentry community, the President addressed concerns about funding challenges and the declining interest among young people in the trade. He assured residents that long-term land leases, spanning up to 20 years, would be made available to support income-generating activities like boat building.

“We will pave the way for young Maldivians to thrive in this field. It is my vision to see them dominate and excel in this crucial sector,” the President asserted.

Beyond supporting the boat-building industry, President Muizzu outlined a comprehensive development agenda for Innamaadhoo. He pledged to expedite the implementation of projects tailored to the island’s needs, including a 50-unit housing initiative. This project, he said, would begin as soon as the island council allocates land and a contractor is secured.

Education and healthcare also featured prominently in the President’s address. He promised to increase resources at the local school and expand the health center’s space and service hours. Over the next two years, the government plans to tackle issues such as coastal erosion, sewerage problems, and the lack of sports facilities on the island.

Innamaadhoo residents welcomed the President’s commitments, expressing hope for a brighter future under his leadership. With plans to preserve the island’s heritage while fostering economic growth, President Muizzu’s visit marked a promising step toward meaningful progress for this Raa Atoll community.
