President Muizzu: Upholding constitutional freedoms for every citizen

By Ahmed Ashraf Published January 28, 2025

In a landmark address to the residents of Dhidhdhoo in Haa Alif Atoll, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to political impartiality and the safeguarding of constitutional freedoms. He emphasized that under his leadership, no individual has faced political retribution, nor will such actions be tolerated in the future.

“Every citizen stands equal before me,” declared President Muizzu, underscoring his dedication to non-discriminatory governance. He assured that services will be provided without bias, irrespective of differing opinions. Highlighting his policy framework, the President stated, “It is my policy to ensure the right to freedom of expression and assembly to the fullest extent, as granted by the Constitution.”

Reflecting on the nation’s history, President Muizzu acknowledged past instances of political punishment by previous administrations. He contrasted this with his government’s approach, noting that no such punitive measures have been enacted during his tenure. “Political oppression and isolation are not policies I follow,” he affirmed, urging citizens to prioritize good manners when expressing opinions.

Addressing the essence of national unity, the President emphasized the importance of respectful discourse. “It’s not an issue to say anything against me or the government. However, as this is a country established on the noble religion of Islam, everyone must accept the principles of our noble religion. Good manners must be prioritized. We must speak in a polite manner. We must accept that every citizen is respected. We must accept that everyone has dignity,” he stated.

He further called upon citizens to rise above political differences and work collaboratively for the nation’s progress. “Progress for the country will come when everyone works together with good manners and a national mindset,” President Muizzu asserted.

In his concluding remarks, the President reiterated the citizens’ rights within the legal framework. “Citizens have the right to do anything that is not prohibited by law, and this government will not do anything outside the law,” he assured, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to lawful governance.

President Muizzu’s address marks a pivotal moment in the Maldives’ journey towards a more inclusive and democratic society, where unity and freedom are paramount.
