President Muizzu: Tobacco Ban is Key to Maldives’ Cancer-Free Future

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 4, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu delivered a heartfelt message in observance of World Cancer Day, aligning with this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” which underscores the individuality of each cancer journey and the collective strength in unity.

The President highlighted the Maldives’ progress toward the global objective of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health issue by 2030. He announced government initiatives to establish a specialized cancer facility and to broaden palliative care services nationwide, ensuring comprehensive care is accessible to all citizens.

Currently, primary healthcare centers at both island and atoll levels offer screenings for five common cancers. Plans are underway to develop specialized screening facilities, which will bolster these programs and extend services to urban healthcare centers.

In a proactive move to mitigate cancer risk factors, the government has recently banned electronic cigarettes and strengthened tobacco control legislation. These measures, coupled with free cessation services, reflect a steadfast commitment to protecting public health.

President Muizzu paid tribute to those who have lost their lives to cancer and lauded the resilience of individuals currently battling the disease. He expressed sincere gratitude to healthcare professionals, non-governmental organizations, international partners, advocates, and the broader community for their relentless efforts in making a difference.

He emphasized, “Together, through collective action and shared responsibility, we are building a future where prevention, early detection, and equitable access to care define our success.”

Reaffirming the government’s dedication, President Muizzu pledged continued collaboration in the fight against cancer to foster a healthier, more resilient, and happier nation.

Earlier today, the President also shared a post on his official X account to mark the occasion.
