Crackdown in Malé: Police Arrest Multiple Suspects in Gang Violence Surge

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 11, 2025

In a determined effort to curb escalating gang violence in Malé, law enforcement agencies have apprehended several individuals over the past 48 hours. These arrests stem from reports implicating the suspects in recent violent incidents that have unsettled the capital.

On Saturday night, police intervened to prevent a potential clash in Malé, detaining a group that included a minor under 18. In a related event the same evening, officers intercepted individuals fleeing on the Hulhumalé-Malé highway after an assault in Hulhumalé. Weapons, including a knife believed to have been used in the attack, were recovered at the scene.

Authorities have noted a concerning rise in gang-related activities in recent months. Between January and August of last year, the Gang Crime Enforcement Unit arrested 67 individuals connected to such crimes, with 37 remaining in custody. The unit also questioned over 12,000 individuals and conducted extensive property and vehicle searches during this period.

In response to the surge in violence, the government has intensified efforts to dismantle gang operations. A dedicated unit was established under a new strategic action plan initiated on July 1, focusing on eradicating organized crime. Home Minister Ali Ihusan emphasized a zero-tolerance policy, stating, “Our goal is to erase all 10 gangs.”

The public remains on edge as authorities work to restore safety. The police have pledged to release more detailed information as investigations progress.

As the situation develops, residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
