By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 12, 2025

The Maldivian music community is mourning the loss of Mohamed Majid, affectionately known as ‘Mezzo Mode,’ who died at 59 due to a heart attack. He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Mezzo Mode’s career spanned approximately four decades, during which he released over 40 original melodies and four albums. His contributions earned him the National Award of Recognition in 2010. He was also the father of renowned singer Mira Mohamed Majid.

Before rising to fame with the ‘Mezzo’ band in the 1990s, he showcased his musical talents with groups such as Club Cobraz, Cream of Acid, Quicksand, and Twentieth Century BC. His self-taught proficiency in drums, guitar, and keyboard, combined with his dedication, led him to perform internationally, including in South Africa, Europe, and the Seychelles.

Beyond his musical achievements, Mezzo Mode was an active participant in the Maldives’ democratic movement. He used his platform to advocate for political reform and was associated with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which played a pivotal role in the country’s transition to a multi-party democracy in 2008. His involvement in the movement underscored his commitment to social change and justice.

The music industry is deeply saddened by his passing, with many professionals extending their condolences to his family. Mezzo Mode’s legacy will continue to inspire Maldivian musicians and fans alike.
