Moon Sighting Confirms First Day of Ramadan on March 1

By Hussain Shinan Published February 28, 2025

The Maldives has officially declared tomorrow, March 1, as the first day of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. The announcement was made following the moon sighting ceremony held at the Islamic Centre earlier today.

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed confirmed that the moon had been sighted in several Islamic countries after sunset, and reliable astronomical calculations indicated that the moon would have also been visible in the Maldives. As a result, the decision was made to mark March 1 as the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Minister Shaheem urged the public to observe the spiritual and religious duties of Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of engaging in good deeds throughout the month. He encouraged everyone to reflect on the values of self-discipline, charity, and unity that Ramadan promotes.

As millions of Muslims around the world begin their observance of fasting and prayer, the Maldives joins the global Muslim community in celebrating this sacred time. The sighting of the moon and the announcement of the first day of Ramadan herald the start of a month of reflection, community, and devotion.
