Maldives Stands with Palestine: Firm Support for Gaza’s Reconstruction and Palestinian Sovereignty

By Hussain Shinan Published March 8, 2025

The Maldives has firmly condemned the continued calls for the displacement of Palestinian people from their homeland, reaffirming its steadfast backing for the Gaza reconstruction plan adopted during the recent Arab League Summit.

At the Extraordinary Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Saudi Arabia on Friday, Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, voiced deep concerns over Israel’s ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement. The session focused on the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, and Minister Khaleel emphasized the importance of ceasing the violence and ensuring the rights of Palestinians to their land.

Minister Khaleel condemned the persistent calls for the forced displacement of Palestinians and strongly advocated for the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza. He further stressed the need for a permanent ceasefire, calling for immediate international efforts to bring an end to the violence.

In his remarks, the Foreign Minister also reiterated the Maldives’ unshakable support for the reconstruction of Gaza, underscoring the importance of the Gaza reconstruction plan that was adopted during the Arab League Summit. He emphasized that the Maldives remains fully committed to the Palestinian cause, highlighting the actions the nation has taken in this regard, such as filing the declaration of intervention in the case concerning Israel’s obligations regarding the presence and activities of United Nations (UN) agencies in Palestinian territories.

The Minister reiterated that the key to a just and lasting peace in the region lies in the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), with its 57 member states, has long been a vocal advocate for Palestinian statehood and the rights of the Palestinian people. Since joining the OIC in 1976, the Maldives has been a strong supporter of the organization’s efforts to achieve justice and peace for Palestine.

As the conflict continues, the Maldives stands firm in its commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and advocating for their right to self-determination and statehood.
