Ongoing Anti-Terror Operation in Maldives: Security Forces Arrest Three

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 11, 2025

Acting on credible intelligence, the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) initiated a joint operation late Monday night, resulting in the arrest of three individuals in Malé and Hulhumalé.

The operation commenced around 11 p.m., with security personnel conducting searches and inspections across various residences in both cities. Eyewitnesses, including journalists, reported observing individuals being detained and escorted away by authorities.

The Maldives Police Service confirmed the arrests, stating that the operation was based on credible intelligence. However, details regarding the identities of the detained individuals and the specific nature of the threats remain undisclosed. When pressed for further information, police representatives refrained from providing additional comments.

This year’s Badr Day, commemorating the historic Battle of Badr, falls on March 16, coinciding with the 17th day of Ramadan. The Battle of Badr, fought in 624 CE, is a significant event in Islamic history, marking a pivotal victory for the early Muslim community. The timing of the operation suggests heightened vigilance by Maldivian authorities to prevent potential threats during this period.

In recent years, the Maldives has faced security challenges, including an assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed in May 2021. A homemade explosive device detonated near his residence in Malé, resulting in serious injuries to Nasheed and others. Authorities attributed the attack to religious extremists, leading to the arrest of multiple suspects. The attack occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, underscoring the potential for heightened security risks during significant Islamic observances.

The current operation reflects the authorities’ unwavering vigilance in addressing security concerns and ensuring the safety of Maldivian citizens. The public is encouraged to remain alert and report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.
