A Fresh Start: Sham’aa Ismail Appointed Registrar of Companies, Replacing Visam After 11 Years

By Hussain Shinan Published March 11, 2025

The Government has appointed Uza Mariyam Sham’aa Ismail as the new Registrar of Companies, effective from March 10, 2025, following the resignation of Mariyam Visam, who stepped down after serving in the position for eleven years.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed, who confirmed Sham’aa’s appointment and extended his congratulations through a statement on X.

Uza Sham’aa brings a wealth of experience and expertise to her new role. Having served as the Consumer Ombudsman since 2021, she has a deep understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks. Before this, she held several key positions, including Legal Consultant at the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Director of Legal and Policy Affairs at the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), and Registrar of the Supreme Court.

Sham’aa holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of the West of England, Bristol, obtained in 2004, and her career thus far has equipped her with a strong foundation in both legal practice and regulatory oversight.

As the Registrar of Companies, Sham’aa will oversee compliance with the Companies Act, including the registration of companies, approval of company names, and supervision of corporate activities. She will also have the authority to take action against companies that fail to comply with the regulations and, if necessary, dissolve companies.

Her appointment marks a new chapter for the role, as she steps in to continue the important work of regulating and fostering business integrity within the country’s corporate landscape.
