President Muizzu Government: ‘Israel Must Be Held Accountable for Crimes in Gaza’

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 19, 2025

In a fervent denunciation, the Maldivian government has condemned Israel’s recent airstrikes across the Gaza Strip, which have tragically claimed over 400 Palestinian lives, many of whom were innocent children. The attacks, occurring during the sacred month of Ramadan, have been labeled by Malé as blatant violations of both the ceasefire agreement and international humanitarian laws.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement urging the global community to act promptly to halt the escalating violence, safeguard innocent civilians, and hold Israel accountable for its actions. The Maldives reaffirmed its steadfast support for the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent and sovereign state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has been a vocal advocate for the Palestinian cause. In a recent interview following his meeting with Palestinian President Dr. Mahmoud Abbas during the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Muizzu emphasized the deep solidarity of the Maldivian people with Palestinians. He condemned the ongoing atrocities committed against them and assured continuous support for their cause.

Further demonstrating this commitment, President Muizzu, on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, called upon the international community to leverage its political and economic influence to end Israel’s occupation and hold perpetrators of war crimes accountable. He reiterated that a lasting solution is achievable only through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In a bold move reflecting public sentiment, the Maldives government announced a ban on Israeli passport holders from entering the country, protesting the ongoing war in Gaza. This decision underscores the nation’s solidarity with the besieged people of Gaza, who are enduring relentless attacks and widespread suffering.

The Maldives’ unwavering support for Palestine is deeply rooted in its foreign policy, reflecting the nation’s commitment to justice and human rights on the global stage. The recent developments further cement the Maldives’ position as a steadfast ally in advocating for the rights and dignity of the Palestinian people.
