Immigration Controller Dismissed Amid Police Investigation

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 21, 2025

In a decisive move underscoring President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption, Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shamaan Waheed was relieved of his duties yesterday. While official statements are pending, sources confirm his dismissal aligns with the administration’s zero-tolerance policy toward misconduct.

This action coincides with an ongoing investigation by the Maldives Police Service into allegations of certain Immigration Department employees exploiting their positions for personal gain from foreign workers. A recent operation led to a nighttime raid, resulting in the detention of three individuals suspected of “abusing their position of authority” to extract illegal benefits from expatriates.

President Muizzu has consistently emphasized the necessity of stringent anti-corruption measures. On International Anti-Corruption Day, he urged citizens to reject and actively resist corrupt practices, asserting that combating corruption requires concrete actions beyond mere rhetoric.

The dismissal of Shamaan Waheed, who had served as Controller General since November 2023, reflects the government’s dedication to maintaining integrity within its institutions. As investigations proceed, the public anticipates additional measures to fortify transparency and accountability across all sectors.

These developments underscore President Muizzu’s strategic approach to governance, aiming to foster a culture where public officials are held to the highest ethical standards, thereby strengthening public trust in governmental operations.
