President Muizzu’s Zero-Tolerance War Strikes: MVR 1.2M & $10K Seized from Ex-Immigration Chief

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 21, 2025

In a decisive move underscoring President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s unwavering commitment to eradicating corruption, the Maldives Police Service conducted a midnight raid on the residence of the recently dismissed Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamaan Waheed. The operation uncovered substantial sums of money and digital devices, intensifying a burgeoning corruption investigation.

Acting on a court-issued warrant, police officers entered Shamaan’s home on Fareedhee Magu, M. Silver Line, around midnight on Friday. Sources working in the investigation indicate that the operation led to the seizure of approximately MVR 1.2 million and USD 10,000 in cash, alongside electronic devices pertinent to the investigation.

This swift action followed Shamaan’s abrupt dismissal from his post on Thursday evening, aligning with an ongoing probe into allegations that immigration officers exploited their positions for personal gain from expatriate workers. Reports suggest that under Shamaan’s leadership, certain officials detained a foreign national on Wednesday. Following the individual’s release, officers allegedly raided his residence, coercing him into handing over money—a bold act reportedly intercepted in flagrante delicto.

In the wake of these developments, President Muizzu appointed former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh as the new Controller General of Immigration. The Presidential Spokesperson, Heena Waleed, announced that Faseeh will assume the role at the level of State Minister, effective immediately.

President Muizzu has consistently reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating corruption within government and state institutions. He has pledged to eliminate all barriers to these efforts and to uphold justice in every action, consistently advocating against corruption.

The allegations against Shamaan have sent ripples through the nation, especially considering his prior commendations for cracking down on illegal immigration—a persistent issue in the Maldives. As the investigation unfolds, the public awaits further details on the extent of the alleged misconduct within the Immigration Department.
