Busted: Duty-Free Cigarettes Smuggled Out of Velana Departure Terminal

By Ahmed Ashraf Published March 26, 2025

Maldives Customs Service has initiated an investigation following the discovery of cigarette cartons concealed within garbage bags removed from the departure terminal of Velana International Airport (VIA). In a recent post on X, Customs officials confirmed the ongoing inquiry but did not specify the quantity of cigarettes found or whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Sources indicate that a police officer may have been involved in attempting to remove the contraband from the airport premises. The Maldives Police Service has requested further information from Customs as part of their collaborative efforts to address the situation.

Maldives has recently tightened its tobacco regulations. In November 2024, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ratified the First Amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, which prohibits the import, sale, free distribution, and use of electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The amendment also bans tobacco use in all government institution buildings and their premises, raises the legal age for purchasing tobacco products to 21, and imposes strict penalties for violations.

Authorities continue to monitor and enforce these regulations to curb illegal tobacco activities and promote public health in the Maldives.
