Severe Weather Grips Maldives: Yellow Alert Issued Amid Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 9, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a yellow alert for regions spanning from Kaafu Atoll to Laamu Atoll, as a low-pressure trough brings heavy rain and thunderstorms across the nation. This adverse weather is expected to persist through today and tomorrow, with conditions anticipated to improve by Friday.

Currently, Malé is experiencing continuous heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder. The Met Office forecasts that various parts of the country will encounter rain and potential thunderstorms by 6 PM today, with certain islands likely to receive significant rainfall.

Wind speeds are projected to range from 10 to 20 mph, escalating up to 35 mph during squalls. Consequently, seas are expected to be moderately rough, becoming rough during squalls. Seafarers and residents are advised to exercise caution during this period.

In the past 24 hours, eight islands have reported rainfall exceeding 50 millimeters, with L. Kadhdhoo recording the highest at 159.5 millimeters. Other notable measurements include GDh. Faresmaathodaa with 87.0 millimeters and GA. Gemanafushi with 86.8 millimeters.

The Met Office attributes the current inclement weather to a low-pressure trough in the region and advises the public to stay updated with official forecasts and heed safety advisories as conditions evolve.
