“We Know Who’s Behind Kurusee” — Russia Exposes Plot to Undermine Maldives Ties

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 16, 2025

The Russian Federation has issued a stern rebuke following claims made by Maldivian political figure Hassan Kurusee, who appealed to U.S. authorities to investigate alleged transfers of equipment through Velana International Airport to Russia.

Reacting to the post, Russia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Levan Dzhagaryan, warned that such allegations are designed to harm diplomatic ties. “We clearly know who is the mastermind of this anonymous publication,” said Ambassador Dzhagaryan. “We persistently request all parties to refrain from undermining the current constructive dialogue between Russia and the United States.”

He further asserted that the post was instigated by a former high-ranking Maldivian politician currently residing in Europe. “I’m persuaded that the Republic’s leadership knows what a previously high-ranked politician—currently hiding in a European country—is behind this post, and will not let his destructive actions affect our amicable ties with Malé,” he added.

Ambassador Dzhagaryan also emphasized the strong tourism bond between the two nations, noting that Russian travelers continue to view the Maldives as one of the world’s most desirable destinations. He praised President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s efforts to improve the country’s financial standing and noted the positive contribution of Russian visitors to this process.

The Maldivian government has yet to issue an official statement. However, the Russian envoy’s remarks make clear that Moscow sees the allegations as part of a disruptive agenda with potential regional consequences.

Observers note that the Maldives—while focused on economic recovery and maintaining international partnerships—must now navigate a moment of heightened scrutiny amid rising global tensions.
