HRCM Criticizes Police Over CCTV Release, Urges Respect for Victim’s Dignity

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 24, 2025

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has expressed concern over the handling of a recent incident involving a 21-year-old woman who sustained serious injuries after falling from the ninth floor of a building in Henveiru, Male’. While acknowledging the government’s efforts towards transparency, the Commission emphasized the importance of safeguarding the dignity and rights of all individuals involved.

In a statement released today, HRCM highlighted the potential risks associated with the premature release of selective evidence during an active investigation. The Commission noted that such actions could compromise the integrity of the investigative process and potentially infringe upon the privacy of those involved. They urged all parties to refrain from disseminating images or videos of the victim and her family on social media platforms, emphasizing the need to respect their dignity and honor.

The Maldives Police Service, in a press briefing held earlier this week, presented CCTV footage indicating that the woman entered the building, identified as H. Fentonia, with a male companion. The footage showed the pair engaging in consensual activities and moving between floors before the woman ascended alone to the ninth floor. Shortly thereafter, a loud noise was recorded, which police believe was the sound of her fall. Both individuals tested positive for narcotics, and the man has been placed under a travel ban as investigations continue.

Addressing public speculation, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen clarified that while the building where the initial gathering took place is jointly owned by his family, the event did not occur within his personal residence. He affirmed that he had no prior knowledge of the gathering and has not attempted to influence the ongoing investigation.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation. He emphasized that the law will be applied equally to all individuals, regardless of their social or political affiliations.

HRCM commended the government’s stance on upholding justice and transparency. The Commission continues to monitor the situation closely and urges all stakeholders to prioritize the rights and dignity of those involved as the investigation progresses.
