In a significant development, the Maldives Police Service (MPS) has arrested 21-year-old Raudh Ahmed Zilal under a court order in connection with the investigation into the fall of a young woman from a building in Henveiru, Male’. Zilal was the last person seen with 21-year-old Mariyam Yumnu before she was found critically injured on the rooftop of a warehouse on April 18.
CCTV footage shows Yumnu and Zilal entering H. Fentenoy, a building with which they had no known connection, in the early hours of the morning. Both appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants, with their movements visibly unsteady as they moved through the stairwells. At one point, Yumnu is seen wearing Zilal’s T-shirt.
Later footage captures Yumnu ascending alone to the ninth floor. A loud noise, believed to be the moment she fell, was recorded shortly afterward. Zilal is then seen frantically searching for her throughout the premises and outside but left the scene without notifying authorities.
Police explained that the delay in arresting Zilal was due to the need to gather sufficient evidence to support charges, noting that if charges are not substantiated within 30 days of arrest, the case could collapse. They also confirmed that Zilal was not cooperating with investigators.
In addition to the arrest, authorities have imposed travel restrictions on all individuals who were with Yumnu prior to the incident and have collected urine samples for drug testing. Both Yumnu and Zilal tested positive for narcotics, which investigators believe may have played a role in the events.
Despite widespread speculation and allegations on social media, police have stated there is no indication of foul play or that Yumnu was pushed. Chief Inspector Mohamed Samih reiterated that the investigation is ongoing and that the MPS is committed to transparency and due process.
The police have assured the public that they are conducting a fair and thorough investigation and will continue to share updates as new information emerges.
