President Muizzu Accepts Police Chief’s Resignation in Swift Move to Uphold Public Trust

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 27, 2025

In a significant development, Police Commissioner Ali Shujau has tendered his resignation, which President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has accepted, following mounting public pressure over the investigation into the fall of 21-year-old Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed from a ninth-floor building on April 18.

The incident, which left Rasheed critically injured, sparked widespread protests, with demonstrators demanding transparency and accountability from law enforcement agencies. Critics have accused the police of mishandling the investigation and withholding crucial information.

Shujau, who began his career in education before joining the police force in 2006, had served in various capacities, including as head of the Police Academy and the Family and Child Protection Department. He was appointed as Police Commissioner on December 25, 2023.

In response to the resignation, Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naveen has been appointed as the acting Police Commissioner. The government has pledged a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, aiming to restore public trust in the justice system.

As the nation grapples with the implications of this case, citizens continue to call for systemic reforms to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.
