“President Muizzu is Charting a New Economic Course for the Maldives—And We Must All Get On Board,” Qasim Stresses

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 5, 2025

In a significant endorsement, Jumhooree Party leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim has lauded the inauguration of the Maldives International Financial Centre (MIFC) as a transformative step towards economic diversification. Sharing his views on social media, Qasim congratulated President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for launching the MIFC, emphasizing its potential to reshape the nation’s financial landscape.

“The MIFC is a much-needed initiative to diversify our economy and establish the Maldives as a global financial hub,” Qasim stated. He highlighted the importance of reducing the nation’s heavy reliance on tourism by attracting sustainable foreign investments.

Qasim also underscored the necessity of integrating digital currencies and blockchain technology into the MIFC framework. “In today’s rapidly evolving financial environment, embracing fintech innovations is crucial for ensuring a stable and prosperous future,” he noted. Such advancements, he believes, will open international opportunities for Maldivians, particularly the youth and entrepreneurs.

Echoing the sentiment of unity, Qasim called upon all political stakeholders to support President Muizzu’s vision. “This project is a pivotal step towards building a more robust and diverse Maldives,” he asserted.

The MIFC, a collaborative venture between the Maldivian government and MBS Global Investments, is poised to be a cornerstone of the nation’s economic strategy. With an investment of $8.8 billion, the center aims to position the Maldives as a leading financial hub in the Indian Ocean, offering state-of-the-art facilities and fostering innovation in fintech and sustainable finance.

President Muizzu envisions the MIFC as a legacy of bold decisions and national purpose, aiming to transform the Maldives into a developed nation by 2040. “With the MIFC, we are shaping the Maldives of tomorrow—a beacon of innovation and national pride,” he remarked during the inauguration ceremony.

As the Maldives embarks on this ambitious journey, the collaborative efforts of political leaders like Qasim Ibrahim and the government’s strategic partnerships signal a promising future for the nation’s economic diversification and resilience.
