MACL Engages Seaplane Operators in ORAT Talks Ahead of Velana Airport New Terminal Launch

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 1, 2025

As the Maldives prepares for the grand opening of Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new passenger terminal, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has initiated critical discussions with seaplane operators to ensure a seamless transition. These meetings focus on the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process, a strategic approach designed to minimize disruptions and operational risks during the terminal’s phased launch.

The new terminal, a centerpiece of VIA’s extensive $1 billion expansion project, is set to commence operations on July 26, 2025—coinciding with Maldives Independence Day. Spanning 78,000 square meters, the facility aims to accommodate over 7 million passengers annually, a significant increase from the current terminal’s capacity of 1 million.

MACL’s proactive engagement with seaplane operators is part of a broader strategy to coordinate with all stakeholders, including airlines, ground handlers, and regulatory bodies. This collaborative effort ensures that each entity is prepared for the operational shifts associated with the new terminal’s opening.

The ORAT process involves comprehensive testing of systems, training of personnel, and validation of procedures to certify the terminal’s readiness. By involving seaplane operators early in this process, MACL aims to address potential challenges and streamline the integration of services.

The new terminal is part of a larger infrastructure overhaul at VIA, which includes the recently inaugurated Code F runway and the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal—the world’s largest seaplane facility. These developments are pivotal in enhancing the Maldives’ position as a premier global travel destination.

As the July 2025 opening approaches, MACL’s commitment to meticulous planning and stakeholder collaboration underscores its dedication to delivering a world-class airport experience.
