Weather Turns Rough Starting June 9 — Travel Caution Issued

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 13 hours ago

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has issued a weather advisory warning residents and travelers of intensified southwest monsoon conditions expected to impact the nation starting Monday, June 9, 2025. The advisory forecasts a period of five days marked by strong winds, heavy rainfall, and rough sea conditions across the archipelago.

According to the MET Office, wind speeds are anticipated to range between 13 to 23 miles per hour, with gusts potentially reaching up to 45 miles per hour, particularly within cloud bands. These conditions are likely to result in rough seas, and during high tide periods, some islands may experience swell waves, posing risks to coastal areas.

The MET Office urges all parties, especially those involved in sea travel, to exercise caution during this period. Strong winds accompanied by heavy rain can lead to hazardous conditions at sea, and travelers are advised to stay informed about the latest weather updates. Additionally, safety measures should be taken to prevent potential dangers and minimize possible damages caused by the adverse weather.

This intensified monsoon activity coincides with the ongoing public holidays, during which many residents travel between islands. Authorities emphasize the importance of staying vigilant and prepared for sudden weather changes that could disrupt travel plans and daily activities.

The southwest monsoon, locally known as “Hulhangu Moosun,” is a seasonal weather pattern that typically brings increased rainfall and wind activity to the Maldives between May and September. However, the current forecast indicates a particularly active phase, necessitating heightened awareness and preparedness among the populace.

Residents are encouraged to secure loose objects, ensure proper drainage around homes, and avoid unnecessary sea travel during this period. Fishermen and maritime operators should heed warnings and advisories issued by the MET Office to ensure safety at sea.

For continuous updates and detailed forecasts, individuals are advised to monitor official communications from the Maldives Meteorological Service through their website and social media channels.

Stay safe and informed as the Maldives navigates this period of intensified monsoon activity.
