Preserving Heritage: WAMCO Steps In to Protect Maldives’ Historic Sites

By Hussain Shinan Published 9 hours ago

In a move aimed at safeguarding the nation’s cultural legacy, the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) to facilitate the cleaning and upkeep of key archaeological and heritage sites across the Maldives.

The agreement was formalized at a signing ceremony held on June 17 at WAMCO’s headquarters. Permanent Secretary Mohamed Yaniu Hashim signed the MoU on behalf of the Ministry, while WAMCO’s Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel represented the state-owned waste management company.

Under the terms of the partnership, WAMCO will take on the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness and general appearance of selected historical structures that are accessible within the areas where the company operates. These sites will undergo inspections every three months, followed by routine cleaning and beautification activities to ensure their upkeep.

Speaking on the occasion, Ministry officials emphasized that protecting and preserving the nation’s cultural heritage remains a core priority. They also highlighted the valuable role that public companies like WAMCO can play in supporting national conservation initiatives.

“This partnership reflects our belief that preserving heritage is not solely the responsibility of one institution—it is a shared national duty,” the Ministry noted in a statement following the ceremony.

WAMCO, widely recognized for its work in environmental management and public sanitation, expressed its commitment to applying its operational expertise toward the preservation of Maldivian history. The collaboration is expected to enhance the visual appeal and cultural significance of heritage sites, making them more accessible and inviting for both locals and visitors.

Officials from both parties say the MoU represents a meaningful step in integrating sustainability and heritage preservation, contributing to a cleaner, more culturally conscious Maldives.
