“Under President Muizzu’s Vision and Direction, We Delivered This Terminal” – MACL MD Shareef

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 12 hours ago

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has confirmed the opening of its new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) on July 26, 2025, coinciding with national Independence Day, the date Maldives became independent in 1965 . This milestone follows extensive efforts to reduce longstanding congestion at the capital’s main gateway.

At the forefront of the terminal’s development is MACL CEO Ibrahim Shareef, who has emphasised adherence to international standards and operational readiness. In a recent video address to media, Shareef revealed that MACL has engaged Modalis Infrastructure Partners, an international transport advisory firm, to consult on terminal design and functionality . He said Modalis will help ensure the facility is “safe, fully serviced, and compliant with the highest global benchmarks”.

Shareef acknowledged valuable contributions from President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, stating: “The biggest contributor to making the new terminal a reality is President Muizzu—this project is unfolding under his guidance and advice.” He extended formal thanks to the president for his support.

Stretching over roughly 78,000 m², the terminal is designed to serve up to 7.5 million passengers annually—a significant increase from the old terminal’s capacity of about 1–2 million . The modern, single-level terminal will feature 47 check-in counters with Maldivian design elements, 6 self‑service kiosks, and 24 counters for seaplane travellers . Initial operations will include at least three aerobridges, with six more expected to be operational following final testing.

Distinguishing itself from the current terminal, the new structure incorporates advanced technology, dedicated space for passenger comfort, and design influences reflecting Maldivian culture on both exterior and interior design.

MACL has already launched a countdown to the opening in front of the airport’s VIP lounge.
