Protect the Environment with Every Swipe – BML Rolls Out First-Ever ENV POS

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 12 hours ago

Bank of Maldives (BML) has unveiled ENV POS, a pioneering initiative in the Maldivian banking sector designed to channel a share of earnings from every transaction made via its POS terminals into national environmental efforts—without charging customers or merchants extra.

Introducing ENV POS, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Maldives banking sector!

Set to launch on 1 July 2025, ENV POS will allocate a portion of BML’s revenue from each tap or swipe of a BML-issued card to environmental projects protecting the Maldives’ islands, oceans, and ecosystems. Based on current transaction volumes, the bank expects to contribute approximately MVR 5.5 million annually, with contributions increasing in tandem with growing usage.

BML’s CEO and Managing Director, Mohamed Shareef, described the scheme as a “long-term, sustained effort” and urged customers to support the environment through everyday purchases. He stated:

“Whether you’re buying groceries or paying for lunch – choosing to pay with BML can help make a real, measurable difference”.

The funds generated will be allocated via partnerships with NGOs and other organisations toward sustainable programmes—including recycling, reforestation, and improved waste management.

As the country’s largest bank—serving over 365,000 customers across 39 branches, 165 ATMs, and extensive digital channels—BML underscores its central role in social and environmental responsibility . The initiative aligns with national priorities to safeguard the Maldives from environmental threats like climate change and marine degradation.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has endorsed the launch, reinforcing a collaborative approach between government and the private sector . By integrating green financing directly into everyday transactions, BML not only demonstrates leadership in sustainable banking, but also empowers individuals to contribute toward environmental preservation at no extra cost.

As BML rolls out ENV POS, it plans to monitor impact metrics and may expand its network of environmental partners. The scheme’s scale-dependent donations also set a potential precedent for other financial institutions in the Maldives.
